MSO Ad Interim 2008

MSO’s Board of Directors and delegation members met March 14-15 near the Chicago O’Hare airport for the annual Ad Interim Board Meeting. The hottest highlights (requiring a visit from the fire department!) include:

• The Board performed their annual review and update of the MSO Strategic Plan which focuses on the MSO mission statement: The Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO), as a constituent of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), supports the mission of the AAO by providing resources, communication and leadership, while serving as a voice for its component societies and individual members.

• Secretary/Treasurer Dr. Jackie Miller reported the MSO’s bills and finances are in order. As outlined in the MSO Investment Policy, additional revenues were approved for investment in the MSO mutual fund for long-term investment.

• The board passed a motion to submit a bylaws change to the membership for consideration at the fall annual business meeting that would allow MSO to also submit a request for full or partial exemption of dues and assessments to AAO as needed (Article III Membership, 4. Waiver).

• The Nominating Committee report, which included Babette Cohen of Manitoba being nominated to serve as the incoming secretary-treasurer (2009-2010) and Brent Larson as the next MSO Trustee, was approved to be submitted to members before the fall annual business meeting.

• Board members encouraged the MSO delegation to work with other constituents to submit resolutions to the 2008 AAO House of Delegates on subjects including:

- Requiring mandatory component membership (ie clarifying a member must belong to the component, MSO and AAO)
- AAO releasing membership and demographic information to recognized constituent and component organization contacts on a regular basis as requested
- Requesting an evaluation determining the impact of AAO providing association management services to constituents and components and asking for a moratorium on future contracts until reviewed by the 2009 AAO House of Delegates
- Amending the bylaws to clarify eligibility of student membership
- Dropping the obligation of members to select their continuing education programs as part of the AAO Annual Session registration process

• MSO’s Council on Communications representative Dr. Kevin Horner provided an update on the AAO’s public awareness campaign’s success. The MSO board asked the delegation to support the $830 assessment level for the campaign’s continuance that will be proposed for approval at the 2008 AAO House of Delegates.

• The Board discussed a variety of ideas to ensure access to care as well as quality of patient care throughout the MSO constituent area.

• AAO will be asking their selected key contacts to attend a meeting the AAO will fund in Washington, DC in January 2009.

• AAO will send out information late summer on their 2009 President-elects/Leadership Conference to be held February 5, 2009, in Orlando directly prior to the combined AAO/perio meeting. Each component will be able to select and fund the travel for up to two representatives. MSO also will be selecting additional leader representatives to attend.

• Meeting participants were given the game plan to encourage MSO members to attend the 2008 MSO Annual Session to be held October 24-25 in Iowa City, Iowa. The meeting will feature a unique weekend doctor lecture format with the theme “Winning Solutions for Patient Success.” Registration materials will be sent to members early summer or details can be accessed on the MSO Web site.
