We also would like to recognize our capable director Dr. Deb Lein. We are proud to have such active members helping to guide the MSO. The MAO Winter Meeting, held January 11, was a success. Dr. John Casko presented a program entitled, “Surgical Orthodontics, Class III Treatments on Adults,” to the doctors. Ms. Rita Bauer discussed practical tips on using digital photography in orthodontics for the staff. Thanks to our speakers for their informative presentations and to Dr Suzan Ekim for arranging the meeting. The 2008 AAO Governmental Affairs Conference was held January 29-30 in Washington, D.C. Thanks to Dr. Michael Zakula for representing MAO at this event. The conference allowed the strengthening of bonds among leaders within the AAO and raised awareness of the specialty and associated issues among U.S. legislators. In lieu of hosting a Summer/Fall meeting, the MAO is encouraging members to attend the MSO Annual Session on October 24-25, 2008, in Iowa City. Program Chair Dr. Tammy Meister has organized the MAO Winter Meeting to be held at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center Hotel on Friday, January 9, 2009. The doctor program will include Dr. Anoop Sondhi presenting on indirect bonding and self-ligation as well as Dr. Jason Cope presenting on TADs. Dr. Harold Crossley will present on street drugs for the staff program. The MAO Regulatory and Governmental Affairs Committee is pursuing a change in the supervision level for elastic separator placement. The committee’s past experience already has helped to streamline this involved process. We are pleased to report that the Minnesota Board of Dentistry has approved the change so it is now in the rulemaking process. Despite this positive progress, the committee expects it will take at least another six months before the rule change takes effect. The MAO is pleased to report that the Smiles Change Lives program hit a huge milestone in Minnesota – the first Minnesota patient started his treatment in April! The Orthodontic Department at the University of Minnesota is continuing the clinical screening of potential patients to be treated through this program. In addition, due to a significant change in the program (orthodontists no longer are reimbursed for their participation), many more patients will be able to receive treatment with available funds.
