Top Ten Highlights from the MOS 1. Dr. Howard Steinman, Canadian Association of Orthodontists vice-president, attended the MOS meeting on April 15, filling in for president Dr. Gerry Zeit. He brought news from the CAO in his very capable and entertaining manner. If you have the opportunity to meet him next year during his year as CAO president, I am certain that you will consider it a good thing! 2. The CAO will NOT be pursuing its own consumer awareness campaign, largely due to cost and the fact that some provinces are already undergoing their own programs. 3. Fees paid to orthodontists in Manitoba for treating First Nations patients continue to be significantly lower than in any other jurisdiction in the country. To my knowledge, no explanation has been offered, and it remains to be seen how quickly this issue will be addressed. 4. The CAO’s annual convention is in Whistler this year, once again on the same weekend as the MSO meeting. It is unfortunate that Manitoba orthodontists often must choose between attending one meeting or the other. 5. The graduate orthodontic program at the University of Manitoba will be offering lectures by Dr. Claude Remise, November 29, 2010, (Clinical Biomechanics) and Dr. Wick Alexander, November 4, 2011, as part of the 45th anniversary of the program. These will be sponsored by American Orthodontics. 6. Dr. Billy Wiltshire has reached a milestone at the University of Manitoba – 15 years! Congratulations, Billy. We are fortunate that you chose our province to call home. 7. Dr. Rana Shenkarow is expecting her third child this summer. Dr. Christie Laberge, who has taken over Dr. Brent Nikolychuk’s share of the practice he shared with Rana, had her baby this past March. I know that sounds confusing. 8. We are working on our affiliate agreement with the MSO/AAO – slow progress to be sure. 9. Actually, I was being optimistic thinking that there were 10 highlights.
