Our meetings tend to be fairly relaxed affairs as we mix discussion with dinner, making for an enjoyable evening. Our special guest was Dr. Gordie Organ, president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. Gordie’s presentation touched on communications (the success of the CAO Bulletin as recognized by a recent member survey; plans for a major reworking of the CAO Web site); efforts to maintain contact with recent graduates; the continuing futility of attempting to negotiate with the Federal Government for benefits for Aboriginal Canadians; and Bisphenol-A, among other subjects. In recent years the CAO has made extra efforts to ensure that the president attends the meetings of the provincial associations, and most believe that it has been successful in enhancing communication. Just prior to the previous ice-age, ‘Thag,’ an early president of the Manitoba Caveman Orthodontic Society, made efforts to advertise for the organization (records show draft cave drawings with happy smiles), and those efforts now finally have come to fruition. The MOS membership has agreed to contribute approximately $850 each toward a television advertising campaign, building on the AAO’s efforts through Schupp Company. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists will be hosting its annual scientific session in Winnipeg, September 11-13. It promises to be an outstanding meeting: • We have created a technology theme, including speakers Drs. Ron Redmond, James Mah and Sean Carlson. Additionally, Angus Trumble, author of A Brief History of the Smile, will speak (he doesn’t know a thing about TADs, CL II correctors, fibroblasts...). • The auxiliary program is one of the best ever and, coupled with great hotel rates, means that you can bring your whole staff. • The social program boasts Ramblin’ Gordo’s River Casino Cruise, the Diamond Jubilee 60th anniversary President’s Ball, golf at the prestigious Glendale Country Club and a Hermetic Code Tour of the Legislative Building by author Frank Albo.
