The ISO finished up its year at the April 12 meeting, featuring an excellent presentation by Dr. Tiziano Baccetti. Thanks to Dr. Douglas Head for serving as program moderator. The ISO was honored to have MSO President John Kanyusik attend our lunch meeting and give an update of MSO activities. John also installed the ISO officers for the 2010-11 year: In addition, Dr. Head was welcomed aboard as a new trustee and Dr. Betsy Ulrich started her second term as a trustee. Congratulations to all of the doctors for their new positions.
Dr. Spencer Pope was honored for his great job as ISO president. Spencer was grateful to the ISO for the opportunity to serve as president and wished Dr. Ron Jacobson, the new president, a successful year.
The Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) program is now ready to start taking patients. A series of letters were sent to Illinois State Dental Society members and the Medicaid dental clinics in Illinois to raise awareness of the program and to solicit patients. A copy of the letter, along with the patient application, volunteer orthodontist application and other supporting documents, can be downloaded from the ISO web site at www.isortho.org. The DOS coordinator, Dedra Williams, can be reached at 800/699-6785 for more information or to sign up as a volunteer orthodontist. Please take the opportunity to get involved and help out with this access-to-care program that is supported by the AAO. Finally, heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful DOS Committee members, Drs. Mike Durbin, Dennis Flanagan, Paul Miller, Spencer Pope and Frank Whipps, for all of their help in getting this program off of the ground.
Dr. Lee Graber is the new president of the AAO. Sincere congratulations for reaching the highest office in the AAO and thanks for the years of dedication on behalf of orthodontists worldwide. We’re all looking forward to the AAO Annual Session right here in Chicago next May 13-17, 2011. Dr. Steve Marshall is serving as the Local Arrangements Chair of the meeting and is calling for volunteers as room monitors and hosts/hostesses in strategic places in the halls to help attendees find their way around McCormick Place West and Arie Crown Center. The Annual Session will be a great opportunity to showcase Chicago and the strong leadership of the ISO, so please contact Steve to volunteer and help make the meeting a huge success. The ISO will not have a spring meeting in 2011 so that members can take full advantage of this AAO meeting.
Drs. Mike Durbin, Ara Goshgarian, Ron Jacobson and Spencer Pope attended the AAO Professional Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. this past January. They went to Capitol Hill to lobby legislators, including a face-to-face meeting with Illinois Senate candidate Representative Mark Kirk. Political advocacy is becoming increasingly important in our daily professional lives, whether we like it or not. If you have an interest in attending one of the upcoming conferences, contact Drs. Jacobson or Goshgarian.
The ISO has continued its support of the Quest Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago Orthodontic Department. This program helps department chair Dr. Carla Evans to continue her graduate orthodontic program at consistently high standards. Please consider a contribution to the department or to the AAOF so that future orthodontic residents have a chance to enjoy the specialty that has been so generous to all of us.
The ISO 2010-11 scientific program is:
October 4, 2010: Technology Update (Steve McEvoy, Drs. Scott Tyler, Cliff Alexander, and Jeff Kowslowski)
November 15, 2010: Diagnostics (Drs. Jim Hartsfield, Bill Harrell, and Rich Monahan)
February 25, 2011: Esthetics and interdisciplinary care (Dr. David Sarver)
May 13-17, 2011: AAO Annual Session
Have a wonderful summer and see you in the fall.
