Our 2005-2006 season started off on October 24th with an informative presentation by Dr. Hee-Moon Kyung on “The Use of Microimplants in Orthodontics.” At our business meeting, President Rick Sikora presented a check for $1,000 to Dr. Jeff Cavanaugh, the MSO representative to the AAOF. In addition, the ISO became a Regent Donor by pledging $25,000 to the AAOF. Please consider becoming a supporter of the AAOF by pledging a case or joining the Keystone Society. Dr. Sikora also previewed the AAO’s proposed Public Awareness Campaign DVD to the membership in order to highlight its main points concerning the future of the orthodontic specialist.

The ISO is very proud of AAO Trustee and WFO President Lee Graber for the wonderful 2005 WFO/MSO meeting in Paris, France, this past September. It was a smashing success, with many ISO and MSO members attending. Thanks, Lee, for making our component society look so good worldwide.

Congratulations to Dr. Steve Marshall, who was recently appointed as the MSO representative to the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Our remaining program for the 2005-2006 year:
February 24 – Dr. Steve Dugoni, ISO-sponsored speaker at the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting
March 20 – Ms. Rosemary Bray, teamwork in the office

I wish you all a safe and happy New Year.

The October ISO meeting was a great success. The first day of the meeting was held in conjunction with the Iowa Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. Speaker Dr. Keith Sherwood presented an informative lecture on “Implant-Based Orthodontics.” Being both an orthodontist and oral surgeon, he was able to speak the language of both specialties. I think everyone left the meeting eager to try new techniques utilizing implants.

New officers were installed, as listed above. Dr. Judith Demro has been gracious enough to continue on for another year as Secretary/Treasurer. Judy does a great job planning these meetings and keeping us all informed of new happenings in the ISO. Special thanks to outgoing president Dr. Carney Loucks for his dedication and vast time commitment in the last year. Carney has been described as a “master of efficiency who attacked the real issues” during his tenure as president. Congratulations also to Dr. Kim Wass as a new member of the Executive Committee.

Dr. Lee Wilham handed out information about the “Meth Endangers Kids Program.” In the last few years national news broadcasts have focused on Iowa’s methamphetamine addiction problem. The MEK Foundation was formed to serve as a catalyst to turn our state from the “Meth Capital” to the “Meth Information Capital of America.” It is very important that dental practitioners and other health-care providers are able to recognize the signs and symptoms of methamphetamine use. This program provides free information and educational materials for the general public about the dangers of methamphetamine use. For more information and brochures for your office, visit www.MEKIowa.org.

Please send me your updates and announcements if you wish to have them printed in the next MSO Newsletter.

The MAO  Board was well represented at the joint meeting of the MSO and the WFO in Paris, France, September 10-14, 2005. Our new director to the MSO, Dr. Deb Lien, our president, Dr. Kevin Denis, and board members Drs. Steve Henseler, Tammy Meister, Michelle Bergsrud, Steve Litton and Brent Larson all were in attendance. They report that the meeting was excellent as well as a wonderful experience. At the MSO business meeting, Dr. Larson was installed as Secretary/Treasurer and Dr. Litton was installed as president-elect of the MSO.

The MAO has continued its representation at the Minnesota Board of Dentistry this fall. The expanded duties for dental assistants and dental hygienists are currently in the rule-making process with other changes proposed by the board. Drs. Lee Sinna, Deb Lien and Donna Stenberg continue to give the MAO excellent representation at these board meetings.

The Annual Winter Meeting of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists is scheduled for January 6, 2006, at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center Hotel with Dr. Keith Sherwood as our program speaker. Dr. Sherwood is a dual-trained oral surgeon and orthodontist and will be speaking on implant anchorage and impacted teeth. It should be informative for all who attend.

Plans are in the works for the Summer 2006 meeting. It is scheduled for Friday, August 25, at the Legends Golf Club with Dr. Jay Bowman as the speaker. More information will be forthcoming this spring.

The MAO Board has formed a task force to develop the “Smiles Change Lives” program here in Minnesota for those children who need orthodontic treatment but cannot afford it. The task force includes Drs. Kevin Denis, Keith Erickson, Michelle Bergsrud, John Beyer and Steve Litton. If you wish to participate in this program, please feel free to contact any of the task force members.

The Missouri Society of Orthodontists is looking forward to participating in the MSO meeting in St. Louis, September 15-17, 2006. St. Louis will be showcasing “Excellence in Orthodontics,” an outstanding opportunity for learning for doctors and staff and family fun. Dr. Jim Klarsch and his scientific program chair, Dr. Buzz Behrents, have put together an impressive list of speakers including Drs. Jim McNamara, David Sarver, Dwight Damon and others. The tentative baseball schedule has the Cardinals in town that weekend, so the MSO plans to hold an event at the new Busch Stadium on Friday evening.

Our Missouri meeting for 2007 will be held in Kansas City in conjunction with the Kansas Society of Orthodontists.

Members who are interested in becoming part of a practice coverage agreement should contact Dr. Mark Dake. Agreements already exist that cover parts of the urban areas of Missouri but do not exist that cover the rural areas of the state.

The Missouri Dental Association has been busy working with the legislators in Jefferson City monitoring legislative issues relative to dentistry. Please support their efforts and remain informed by contacting Jake Lippert at the MDA at jake@modental.org. Of some interest is a bill that was signed into law effective August 28, 2005, which allows the development of a Dental Hygienist Distance Education Program. The program will allow hygiene students to complete the didactic courses using the Internet and allow clinical training in a dental facility off campus that has been approved and accredited.

Again, a reminder to have staff members certified and to have them take the expanded functions exam to comply with state laws for those duties which they perform. An orthodontic course is scheduled for Saturday, February 4, 2006, in Jefferson City. Contact Agnes at the MDA if you have staff members interested in the course that day or if you are interested in being a trainer.

TheThe WSO did not have their usual fall meeting due to the joint meeting with the MSO in Paris on September10-14, 2005. We are very proud to have our own Dr. Mike Inda finishing a successful term as the MSO president. Thank you, Mike, for all you have done for orthodontics, especially the WSO. We again acknowledge Dr. Russ Kittleson, for receiving the Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award from the MSO at a reception in his honor.

Our spring 2006 meeting will be held at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva on April 10-11. Dr. Dwight Damon will do a presentation on the Damon system at this doctors-only meeting. Members will be receiving more detailed information as well as a registration form in the near future.

The fall 2006 meeting will be held at the newly-renovated Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin, on October 9-10, 2006. Ms. Cathy Sundvall will combine her practice management and clinical expertise to present a program for doctors, spouses and staff to enjoy. This is a great time of the year in Lake Geneva along with moderate temperatures for golf or lake cruises.

Our last business meeting was held on November 17. Although there were not a lot of major issues discussed at this time, there was some discussion on the following items:

• The initiation of a new Public Relations Program likely using radio as the medium. This program would involve all interested orthodontists in the Province of Manitoba contributing financially to an advertising campaign. An attempt was made previously to start this joint venture, but it seems to be gathering speed this time.

• The Canadian Association of Orthodontists will be holding its Annual Meeting in Winnipeg in 2008. A tentative line-up of speakers for staff and doctors for the scientific portion has been arranged.
