Sather receives 1997 Shepard Award

Congratulations to Dr. A. Howard Sather on receiving the Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award on September 26, 1997, at the MSO Annual Session in Rochester, Minnesota. The award was presented by both Arnold Hill, President of the MSO and a long-time friend and associate, and James Gjerset, friend and Trustee of the Midwestern Society ofOrthodontists.

The Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award is presented by the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists to a member who has made exceptional contributions to the art and science of orthodontics. The award was established in 1987 to honor Dr. Earl E. Shepard, an MSO member who dedicated his entire career to the betterment of his profession.

Dr. Sather exemplifies what a true professional should be. Beyond his clinical expertise, he is a kind and compassionate practitioner who has truly shaped the nature of our specialty. He was born in Aitkin, Minnesota, and received his dental and orthodontic training at the University of Minnesota. Upon graduation in 1959, he joined the Mayo Clinic and seven years later initiated the orthodontic graduate program. He served as its Program Director for twenty years.

Howard was instrumental in the formation of the Minnesota Society of Orthodontists and served as its first president in 1963. He served as chair of the AAO’s Council on Orthodontic Education in 1973. With his expertise on insurance, he has served both the Minnesota Dental Association’s Insurance Committee and the AAO’s Council on Insurance, chairing the latter from 1986-1989. From 1978-1981 he represented the specialty of orthodontics on the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education Committee on Accreditation and is currently a member of the Committee on Advanced Dental Education.

Since 1988 Howard has served as associate editor of the Practical Reviews in Orthodontics tapes. In addition, he has published extensively, has served as a referee for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and is involved in numerous other dental and orthodontic organizations.

Dr. Sather lives with his wife, Ann, on a picturesque hill overlooking the Mississippi River. They enjoy good friends, gardening, gourmet dining and traveling.

Although a giant in the orthodontic world, Dr. Sather has gained the respect of all who have had the privilege of knowing him as a kind, gentle and humble man. He, indeed, represents the ideals of professionalism and service to his fellow man. Congratulations, Howard!
