Matlof receives 1998 Shepard Award
Just as this issue of the MSO Newsletter was going to press, we were informed of the unfortunate death on June 18, 1998, of Michael Matlof, a person of extreme integrity who was devoted to orthodontics, the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists and his family. Mike’s name can be found throughout this issue of the MSO Newsletter as well as several past issues, and his loss will be felt far and wide.
Mike received both his D.D.S. and Master’s degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He also taught in the Orthodontic Department from 1973-1991 and served as acting chair of the department in 1977. During his years of teaching, he twice received “Teacher of the Year” awards. Mike, being so committed to the school, also served as president of both the Washington University Orthodontic Alumni Association and the Washington University Dental Alumni Association. He received awards from these organizations for his service to the school.
Immediately after dental school, Mike served in the Army, receiving a Bronze Star for his service.
A Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Federation Dentaire International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Mike was also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Mike served as president of the West County District of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society, the Missouri Society of Orthodontists and the Pacific Coast Orthodontic Study Group. He served as a Delegate to the AAO House of Delegates and was Secretary/Treasurer of the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists for several years, but due to health reasons, was unable to pursue higher office.
Mike was unanimously elected Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus of the MSO last fall in Rochester. His commitment to the office of Secretary/Treasurer brought the MSO to a new level of purpose. He will receive posthumously the Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award, MSO’s highest honor, this fall in St. Louis, for his devotion to dentistry and the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists.
Mike will be truly missed by his family and many, many friends and colleagues. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Sue, and his family.
