Kinser receives 1999 Shepard Award

The recipient of the Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award for 1999 was D. David Kinser, an orthodontist from Des Moines, Iowa. Dave received this award during the President’s Dinner Dance during the MSO/GLAO Annual Session in Chicago this past September. This award recognizes a person who exemplifies the ideals of the orthodontic profession, community and family and MSO’s Board of Directors unanimously voted Dave as the recipient of its highest award for exemplary contributions to the orthodontics profession.

Dave has made outstanding contributions to every aspect of our orthodontic specialty. He is an outstanding, dedicated practitioner, teacher, researcher, and role model for young students and all members. He is a prime example of a true professional.

Dave practices with three other orthodontists in Des Moines. He has served as president of a number of organization including the Iowa Society of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists and the Midwestern component of the Edward H. Angle Society. He also serves as a director on a number of corporate boards.

Dave has served as an adjunctive associate professor in the Orthodontic Department, College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. His involvement in clinical teaching extends to and is complimented by his research and thesis projects with graduate students. Through these activities he has positively influenced the graduate students in their future ethical practice decisions, as well as establishing standards for clinical excellence.

Dr. Kinser has received national recognition for his work on the AAO Council on Communication as one of the pioneers in helping to develop and implement our National PR/Advertising campaign that still exists today. He is co-chairman of the Scientific Program for the AAO 2000 Annual Session.

Dr. Kinser holds membership in a vast number of dental and orthodontic organizations.  Additionally, he has served as president of many, including the Iowa Society of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists and the Midwestern component of the Edward H. Angle Society.  Dr. Kinser is co-chairman of the Scientific Program for the AAO 2000 Annual Session.  He also serves as a director on a number of corporate boards.

Another area of dedication has been to academics.  He has served as an adjunctive associate professor in the Orthodontic Department, College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa.  His involvement in clinical teaching extends to and is complimented by his research and thesis projects with graduate students.  Additionally, he annually coordinates in-office visits for the orthodontic residents.  Through these activities he has positively influenced the graduate students in their future ethical practice decisions, as well as establishing standards for clinical excellence.

Through all of these professional activities, David has been supported and encouraged by his wife, Sharon.  David and Sharon have three children, Mark, Robin and Alison.
