Jensen receives 2000 Shepard Award The Earl E. Shepard Distinguished Service Award is presented annually by the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists to recognize an individual who has dedicated his/her life to the ideals of the orthodontic profession, community and family. MSO’s Board of Directors unanimously selected Dr. James L. Jensen for his exemplary contributions to the art and science of orthodontics and to his community. Dr. Jensen is a dedicated practitioner, teacher and mentor who serves as a hardworking role model for all who seek to improve their professional and personal skills. He was born in Detroit, Michigan; earned his D.D.S. from Loyola University in Chicago, and his M.S.D. from Northwestern University. He served two years in the army in Texas before establishing his clinical practice of orthodontics in 1957. Dr. Jensen touched the lives of many patients over more than 40 years of practice. He also had a positive moral and ethical influence on the many residents he taught during his career. He served as a clinical professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Northwestern University and professor and chairman of the Orthodontic Department at Loyola University for three years. He has actively served as a leader in a number of dental and orthodontic organizations, including as president of the Illinois Society of Orthodontists, South Suburban Dental Society, Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society and the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Jensen has prepared and published numerous orthodontic articles and presentations for dental and orthodontic societies. His orthodontic courses have been presented in many countries around the world. From a personal perspective, he is an elder and deacon in his community church, a Cub Scout leader, Boy Scouts of America executive director and a member of the Jaycees and Lions International. He also has been a trombonist for the Homewood Flossmoor Community Summer Band, Prairie State College Concert Band and Governor State University Concert Band. In all these activities, Dr. Jensen has been supported and encouraged by his wife Caroline. They have two children, James, Jr. and Judy. Dr. Jensen surpasses the criteria for selection as this year’s recipient of MSO’s highest honor and we heartily congratulate him.
