MSO 2009 Annual Session Top 10
  1. Presentations from MSO 2009 Annual Session in Minneapolis Posted Online - Highlights noted on the survey from the198 doctors, 12 staff and 27 exhibiting companies that returned to campus at the University of Minnesota October 16 – 17 included “diverse lectures on things we usually do not get, getting back to campus, networking in this type of setting, the hands-on Cone Beam seminar...”  Go to MSO’s Web site to view powerpoint presentations of the diverse scientific lectures on a variety of medical topics that accomplished the meeting theme of “Broadening Your Perspectives, Orthodontics and Beyond.”
  2. Dr. Mike Fuchs Honored with 2009 MSO Shepard Award Presentation -  MSO’s highest service award was presented to Dr. Mike Fuchs of South Dakota at the 2009 MSO Annual Business Meeting. The MSO board unanimously approved Dr. Frank Whipps of Centralia, Illinois to receive the 2010 MSO Shepard Award at the 2010 MSO/SAO Annual Session to be held with the Southern Association of Orthodontists September 22 – 26 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.   
  3. MSO Names New Officers and Director - The following 2009 - 2010 MSO officers were installed at the MSO Annual Business Meeting:  Drs. John S. Kanyusik of Mankato, Minnesota as president; Jacqueline M. Miller of Washington, Missouri as president-elect;  Babette Cohen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada as vice president and Ross L. Crist of Sioux Falls, South Dakota as secretary-treasurer. Dr. Brent E. Larson of Minneapolis, Minnesota was recognized for his service to the MSO as the 2008 – 2009 president. He will continue to serve as a member of the MSO board as immediate past president, in addition to continuing to serve as the MSO Trustee to the American Association of Orthodontists Board. Dr. Ryan K. VanLaecken of Watertown, South Dakota joins the MSO board as a new director.  
  4. Bylaws Changes Approved - MSO components are asked to review their bylaws to ensure they are up-to-date to be in compliance with the AAO and MSO and their respective state (or provincial) laws. MSO approved a bylaws revision to be consistent with AAO changes in granting dues and assessment exemption for members in good standing for at least 50 cumulative years.  MSO also approved a bylaws revision to allow flexibility in the timing of installation of officers and directors assuming their position on the board.
  5. Component Affiliation Agreements Distributed for Signature – 2008 – 2009 MSO President Brent Larson asked directors to communicate back to their components that the component agreements (posted on MSO Sharepoint for director access) are formalizing in writing a relationship that already exists while also protecting everyone in the AAO family chain, just as one would incorporate their own practice. If there are questions, the AAO has been supportive of conference calls or answering questions individually regarding this document. The agreement should be signed by the component president and secretary and sent to the MSO office.
  6. MSO President’s Reception Fund Expanded to a Special Use Fund – The MSO board authorized expanding the restricted use of the “President’s Reception Fund” to a “MSO Special Events Fund” to authorize disbursements for special MSO member events with board approval.  The fund was broadened to be authorized to supplement special events in addition to funding the AAO President’s Reception the year an MSO member is president.
  7. Updated MSO Investment Policy Statement Approved – The MSO board congratulated the ad hoc taskforce’s work under the direction of Dr. Babette Cohen, MSO secretary/treasurer, to up-date the policy.
  8. MSO 2010 Budget Approved, Stipends Realigned – The MSO members approved the proposed MSO 2010 budget at the annual business meeting with the proposed readjustment of current honorariums to be one stipend for the same annual amount in total paid to the MSO communications chair/editor.  
  9. AAO Seeking Candidates for Advocacy Conference in DC – Members are encouraged to become involved by requesting to be invited to the AAO Advocacy Conference in January in DC by contacting MSO’s representative to COGA, Dr. Mark Dake at <mark@osoortho.com> or 417-256-5100.
  10. Components Submit Resolution Ideas to MSO for 2010 Ad Interim  - Component members are encouraged to contact their MSO director if there are ideas for resolution submission prior to the MSO Ad Interim to be held March 12 – 13 in St. Louis, Missouri.
