Midwestern Society of Orthodontists
MSORTHO  >  2009 HOD MSO

The Midwestern Society of Orthodontists brought home a winner at the 2009 American Association of Orthodontists House of Delegates under the direction of MSO delegation chair Ross Crist and vice chair John Kanyusik. Additional MSO delegates were Babette Cohen, Mike Hipp, Deb Lien, Steve Litton and Steve Marshall and alternate delegates Ara Goshgarian, Ginny Mennemeyer and Dennis Sommers.

The MSO especially appreciated how first-time chair Crist and first-time delegates (Goshgarian, Mennemyer and Sommers) rose to the occasion to be all-stars on the court. MSO wishes former chair Jackie Miller a speedy recovery from ankle surgery as she was sorely missed by sitting on the bench back home.

MSO swished a three-point shot as these MSO leaders were installed at the House for service to the AAO BOT: Keith Levin as House speaker for 2010 – 2012; Brent Larson as new MSO Trustee and Lee Graber as AAO President-Elect. Graber noted at the House podium after installation that it was his honor on behalf of the MSO to serve the AAO for over 30 years in a variety of volunteer capacities.

In addition, David Musich received the James E. Brophy Distinguished Service Award from the AAO and John Kanyusick received a Dale Wade Educational Award from the ABO.

Action on team MSO-sponsored resolutions:
42-09 MSO – Academic Members - Adopted - Academic members (non-U.S./Canada graduates) may serve on elective or appointive positions that are academically related as determined at the discretion of the appointing entity or person.

38-09 COMEJC (S1 MSO) - Revision of Principles of Ethics...Principle IV – Adopted as amended by MSO.

17-09 MSO/SAO (S1-BT)– Affiliation Agreement – Adopted unanimously – The House of Delegates acknowledged the existence of Affiliation Agreements between the AAO and constituents and between constituents and components. All AAO constituents have signed the AAO affiliation agreement. No action is needed regarding the component affiliation agreement signatures until a final approved version has been received for distribution.

18-09 MSO – AAO Calendar – Support referral to AAO BOT – AAO staff was directed to research all options without specifying a proprietary-named system.

20–09 MSO – Waivers – Adopted on consent agenda – COMJEC will study and make a recommendation to the AAO BOT on a consistent manner for membership waiver approval.

19-09 MSO substitute by 48-09 RC as amended by MSO – Insurance Education – Adopted - The BOT was directed in the revised resolution to develop an aggressive national public relations program to educate human resource professionals.

In addition, a number of 2009 House resolutions addressed membership-related bylaw changes, AAO Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principle of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct. Other TOP TEN key issues included:
•Dues remain the same. Public Awareness Campaign Funding by Reserves – After much debate, resolution 02-09 passed to keep dues for FY 2010 the same at $745 with the remaining cost to maintain the current campaign level funded by reserves (utilizing over $2.3 million from excess liquid reserves as a deficit budget).
•Campaign Direction - There were several resolutions adopted relating to the campaign. One adopted resolution requested COC to have the campaign increase member engagement and incorporate the Adam’s report recommendation to increase public relations efforts. Another resolution passed asking the campaign modify its business plan to develop more customizable materials for constituent, components and member. A controversial resolution to utilize an assessment tool to measure new patient visits for campaign success was defeated.

On consent agenda:
•ADA membership will now only be required for AAO membership upon date of membership application.
•COIT was changed from a Council to a standing committee.
•The AAO Membership Directory starting in FY 2010 will be available only electronically.
•AAO will study student debts and investigate financial services.
•A 7th critical issue was approved for the AAO Strategic Plan: Operating, Marketing and Cost Management of an Orthodontic Practice.
•AAO will investigate supporting state and federal legislative efforts to discourage insurance companies from utilizing stated orthodontic benefits for payment of ancillary procedures.
•The Voluntary Staff Certification Program for orthodontic assistants’ business plan was approved.
GLAO recognized Speaker Tom Ahman as the House gave Speaker Ahman a standing ovation on the completion of his successful three-year service to the House.

The onsite report from the 2009 Annual Session Planning Committee announced that currently there are 15,500 total registered which included 5,733 doctors and 2,926 staff.

Thanks to all the MSO leaders who took the time to be a part of the team to again make MSO a winner!
